Wegmans Plans to Break Ground in Holly Springs Mid-to-Late 2026; Town Approves Final Six-Month Plan Extension
The supermarket, set to be built south of Ralph Stephens Road on Wildwood Farm Way, has been on hold since it was first approved in 2019 alongside neighboring Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
Holly Springs, NC, Jul. 15, 2025 — The long-anticipated Wegmans supermarket in Holly Springs has taken a crucial procedural step toward becoming a reality, as the company has requested its fourth and final extension to keep its development plan active.
During Tuesday evening’s Town Council meeting, members approved Wegmans’ request to extend the expiration date of its development plan from August 15, 2025, to February 15, 2026. This marks the last allowable 6-month extension for the project under town regulations.
The planned store, set to be built south of Ralph Stephens Road on Wildwood Farm Way, has been on hold since it was first approved in 2019 alongside a neighboring Lowe’s Home Improvement store. While Lowe’s opened in 2022, Wegmans has yet to begin construction.
According to documents submitted with the extension request, Wegmans now anticipates breaking ground in mid-to-late 2026. To keep the project moving, the company must submit civil construction drawings to the town by the new February deadline and remain actively engaged in the review process.
The project has remained valid through a mix of pandemic-related executive orders and formal extensions approved by the Town Council. The state’s COVID-19 emergency order temporarily paused expiration clocks on approved development plans, extending their life through early 2023. Wegmans’ approval has been kept alive since then through three consecutive extensions granted in February 2024, July 2024, and January 2025.
The 18-month plan validity period—set by the 2002 version of the town’s Unified Development Ordinance—will officially expire on February 15, 2026, with no further extensions possible.
If Wegmans does not submit the required construction drawings by that date, the project approval would lapse, forcing the grocer to restart the approval process from scratch.
Wegmans operates more than 110 stores nationwide and employs over 53,000 people. A Holly Springs location would represent a significant addition to the town’s growing retail corridor.
