WCPSS Proposed 2024-25 Enrollment Caps for Holly Springs and Apex Schools
New overflow assignments are proposed to manage student redistribution.
Holly Springs, NC, Dec. 3, 2024 — The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) has unveiled its recommendations for managing school overcrowding for the 2024-25 academic year, emphasizing solutions to address rising student populations. Several schools in Holly Springs and Apex are among those affected by enrollment caps, and new overflow assignments are proposed to manage student redistribution.
Enrollment Caps: Holly Springs and Apex Schools
The following schools in Holly Springs and Apex have been capped due to exceeding capacity limits:
Holly Grove Elementary (MTYR): Capped to address overcrowding, students who exceed the school’s capacity will be redirected to nearby designated overflow schools.
Holly Ridge Elementary: Continues to operate under capped status, with overflow students reassigned to schools with available capacity.
Olive Chapel Elementary (MTYR) in Apex: Maintains its capped status, redirecting additional students to mitigate the strain on core facilities.
Apex Friendship High School: The school and its feeder pattern remain capped, and students are directed to alternative high schools with space.
Overflow Assignments
To balance enrollment and reduce strain on capped schools, WCPSS has designated specific overflow schools. These changes aim to provide stability for families and better align student numbers with available resources.
In Holly Springs, depending on zoning and availability, students from Holly Grove Elementary and Holly Ridge Elementary may be redirected to nearby uncapped schools with capacity, such as White Oak Elementary.
For Apex, students from Olive Chapel Elementary will primarily transition to nearby schools, focusing on minimizing travel disruptions.
Transportation and Logistics
The proposed changes could require the addition of at least one bus route, increasing potential travel times for some students. WCPSS continues to face challenges in recruiting drivers to meet the increased demand. However, the district remains committed to providing safe and reliable transportation options.
Next Steps and Community Involvement
The WCPSS Board of Education (BOE) will vote on the recommendations in January 2025. Families are encouraged to attend BOE meetings or review the detailed plans on the WCPSS website to understand better how these changes may affect their communities.
