Reader Question: “Would it be possible to put a traffic light at the intersection of Earp St & Main by the Pimento Tea Room? Please?”

Holly Springs, NC, Ja. 20, 2025 — Residents concerned about traffic safety or congestion at the intersection of E. Earp Street and Secondary Road 6107 (N. Main Street) in downtown Holly Springs can take formal steps to request a traffic signal, but it’s important to involve both NCDOT and the Town of Holly Springs to ensure the request receives full consideration.

Step 1: Submit a Traffic Signal Request to NCDOT

Because SR 6107 is a state-maintained roadway, all signal requests must be submitted to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The official NCDOT Traffic Signal Request form is available here.

When submitting the request, include:

The exact location (E. Earp Street & SR 6107 (N. Main St.))
A brief description of safety or traffic concerns
Times of day when congestion or issues occur
Any known crash or pedestrian safety concerns
Your contact information

Once submitted, NCDOT assigns the request to its traffic engineering team for evaluation.

Step 2: Notify the Town of Holly Springs

Even though NCDOT makes the final decision, the Town of Holly Springs should also be notified.

Town input can influence:

Whether NCDOT prioritizes the request
Whether the Town submits a supporting recommendation
How the intersection is evaluated in future transportation planning

Residents should contact Holly Springs Public Works / Transportation via email at publicworks@hollyspringsnc.gov.

When contacting the Town, residents should:

Reference the intersection (E. Earp St. & SR 6107)
State that a request has been or will be submitted to NCDOT
Ask the Town to support or review the request
Briefly describe safety or traffic concerns

Notifying the Town ensures the issue is documented locally and strengthens the request during NCDOT’s review.

Step 3: Understand the Review Process

After submission, NCDOT conducts a traffic engineering study in accordance with federal and state standards, including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

The study evaluates:

Traffic volume and congestion
Crash history
Pedestrian activity
Intersection geometry and visibility

Only intersections that meet specific criteria can receive a traffic signal, even if the location feels unsafe to drivers.

Step 4: Follow Up If Needed

Residents can follow up or ask questions by contacting:

NCDOT Customer Service
1-877-DOT-4YOU (1-877-368-4968)
https://www.ncdot.gov/contact

You may request to speak with the Division Traffic Engineer responsible for Wake County.

Summary

To request a traffic signal at E. Earp Street and SR 6107:

Submit a request to NCDOT
Notify Holly Springs Public Works
Follow up if needed

Taking all three steps gives the request the best chance of being formally reviewed and approved.
