Holly Springs, NC, Nov. 12 — Since the legalization of sports betting in North Carolina on March 11, 2024, the industry has exploded, with residents eager to try their luck online and at the state’s newly opened retail sportsbooks. In the first two months alone, North Carolinians placed more than $1 billion in wagers—underscoring the widespread popularity of sports betting in the Tar Heel State.

According to recent reports from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, total bets hit $1.026 billion from March 11 through the end of April, with an additional $282 million in promotional wagers. In April alone, online and in-person sportsbooks handled over $648 million, netting operators more than $105 million in gross revenue. By September, betting activity continued strong, with another $575 million wagered and $70 million in operator revenue, generating $12.6 million in monthly tax revenue. The trend shows no signs of slowing as sports fans throughout the state place bets on everything from NFL matchups to college basketball tournaments.

Sports betting brings more than just excitement to North Carolina—it delivers real economic benefits. The state has gained millions in new tax dollars with an 18% tax rate on gross wagering revenue. This revenue has been earmarked for several high-impact initiatives, including:

Education and Youth Programs: An annual $2 million is directed to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for gambling addiction education and treatment. Additionally, $1 million is allotted to North Carolina Amateur Sports to fund youth sports programs across the state, while each of the 13 public university athletic departments receives $300,000 to support student-athletes.

Major Events Fund: The state has also created a fund to attract high-profile sporting events, tournaments, and festivals to North Carolina. This fund is designed to support tourism, generate local spending, and stimulate economies in host cities.

General Fund Contributions: The remainder of sports betting revenue feeds into North Carolina’s General Fund, benefiting public services, infrastructure projects, and a range of other state initiatives.

“This is a huge win for the state,” commented an official from the Lottery Commission. “Not only are we meeting a demand from residents, but we’re seeing a clear boost in revenue that can directly improve our schools, youth programs, and community services.”
