Route 55 Jazz Orchestra Brings a Swinging Beatles Tribute to Holly Springs
Upcoming concert, "All You Need Is Love... and Jazz," is set for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the Holly Springs Cultural Center
Holly Springs, NC, Feb. 25, 2025—Local music lovers are in for a treat as the Route 55 Jazz Orchestra prepares to take the stage with a unique, jazz-infused tribute to The Beatles. Their upcoming concert, "All You Need Is Love... and Jazz," is set for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the Holly Springs Cultural Center. It promises a night of classic hits reimagined with big-band energy.
Since its founding in 2006, the Route 55 Jazz Orchestra has become a local music scene staple. It is known for its creative, theme-driven performances. Under the direction of Dave Reitmeyer, the orchestra has moved beyond traditional big band sounds to explore dynamic and engaging concert experiences. Rather than sticking to the Glenn Miller-style arrangements that might be expected from a big band, Route 55 embraces a broader repertoire designed to appeal to seasoned jazz enthusiasts and younger audiences alike.
The band is diving into The Beatles' legendary catalog for this latest show, putting a fresh spin on beloved songs while incorporating humor, storytelling, and audience interaction. Unlike conventional concerts where musicians play through their set with little engagement, Route 55’s philosophy is that jazz should be as entertaining as it is musically impressive.
“Most groups perform concerts in this way: ‘Here is our music. Sit down and listen,’” Reitmeyer explains. “There is a place for serious shows, but my philosophy is that we are in the entertainment business, not just the music business.”
Beyond the music, audiences can expect plenty of lighthearted moments, as Reitmeyer takes cues from legendary entertainers who blended performance with personality. He sees himself not only as a bandleader but as part comedian and part storyteller, ensuring that attendees walk away with more than just an appreciation for great music—they leave with an experience.
The Route 55 Jazz Orchestra has built a loyal following in Holly Springs, with its themed performances drawing consistent crowds. In addition to their spring and fall concerts, the band has made their holiday performances a cherished annual tradition. Their Christmas concerts, filled with jazz-infused holiday favorites, have become a seasonal highlight for local audiences. While the orchestra primarily plays at the Holly Springs Cultural Center, its musicians are active throughout the region, with some also performing in neighboring big bands like the one in Fuquay-Varina, led by Gerald Parker. This interconnectedness underscores the group’s role in strengthening the local music community.
For many, these concerts are more than just an evening out—they are a chance to revisit cherished musical memories while sharing them with younger generations. Reitmeyer acknowledges the bittersweet reality that many longtime attendees have aged out or passed on, but he remains dedicated to keeping the music alive and accessible.
“I believe we give older folks a chance to relive the music of their youth but in a way that engages younger people, too,” he says.
