The proclamation (document) recognizes the historic role Marines have played in defending the nation’s freedoms and highlights the enduring Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment. It also pays tribute to the Marines’ contributions in combat and humanitarian missions worldwide, noting that more than 40,000 Marines are currently based in North Carolina.
Mayor Sean Mayefskie read the proclamation aloud during the meeting, marking November 10, 2025, as the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th Anniversary in the Town of Holly Springs. Mayefskie encouraged residents to reflect on the rich history of the US Marine Corps and to honor those who have worn the uniform “with pride and distinction.”
Six local Marines were present to receive the proclamation. Each also shared when and where they served, offering the audience personal glimpses into their time in the Corps.
The proclamation also celebrates the long-standing tradition of “The President’s Own” Marine Band, founded in 1798, which has performed at every presidential inauguration since Thomas Jefferson’s in 1801, a symbol of the Marine Corps’ enduring presence in American life.
The recognition is part of the Council’s Vibrant Community strategic priority, reinforcing the town’s commitment to honoring military service and civic pride.
