Fuquay-Varina (NC) Police Explorers Earn Top Finishes at National Competition
Town commissioners recognize youth law-enforcement program for strong performance at Winterfest event.

Fuqay-Varina, Mar. 15, 2026 — Members of the Fuquay-Varina Police Department’s Law Enforcement Explorer program (website) were recognized during last week’s Town Commissioner’s meeeting after earning top finishes at a national competition earlier this year. The program helps students interested in law-enforcement careers gain leadership experience and practical training.
“The Law Enforcement Explorers Program is not only a source of pride for the department, but an essential investment in the future of policing in our community. The program provides hands-on, real-world training and leadership opportunities, preparing young men and women to become the next generation of law enforcement professionals.”
- Police Chief, Tim Smith
The group traveled to Gatlinburg, TN, in February to compete in the 2026 Winterfest Competition, which features scenario-based law-enforcement challenges and physical fitness events for youth Explorer programs.
The Fuquay-Varina Explorers placed second in Accident Investigation and second in Crisis Negotiations, two of the competition’s major events.
According to police officials, seven current Fuquay-Varina police officers previously participated in the Explorer program before joining the department.
The recognition ceremony also highlighted the volunteer commitment required from police officers who mentor the students.
Officials said the program not only builds future law-enforcement talent but also strengthens relationships between the police department and the community.
