Voter ID Requirements
All voters must present a valid photo ID when voting in person. Acceptable forms include a North Carolina driver’s license, state-issued ID card, U.S. passport, or other approved photo identification.
If you do not have a valid photo ID, you can obtain one free of charge from your county board of elections through the end of the early voting period.
If you arrive at the polls without your ID, you may still vote by completing a Photo ID Exception Form (also known as an affidavit of reasonable impediment). This allows your vote to count if you have a valid reason for not showing an ID, such as a lost ID, a religious objection to being photographed, or displacement by a natural disaster.
Alternatively, voters who forget their ID can return to the county board of elections with their ID by noon on the third business day after Election Day to ensure their ballot is counted.
Voting by Mail
If you’re voting absentee, include a photocopy of your valid photo ID with your ballot. If you do not have one, complete the Absentee Photo ID Exception Form provided in your ballot packet.
Absentee ballots must be received by the county board of elections by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
