Holly Springs, NC, October 11, 2026 — Local Time Brewing won a silver medal for its Vinland Honey Lager at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival competition, with winners announced today in Denver, CO. The downtown Holly Springs brewery’s American copper lager, brewed with orange blossom honey, placed second in the Honey Beer category.

Chris and Kelly Gallagher founded Local Time in 2022, and the brewery also operates a taproom in Lillington. Head Brewer Devin Singley leads its brewing program, drawing on ingredients and brewing traditions from around the world.

“Our whole team is thrilled to see Vinland recognized on a national stage,” said Chris Gallagher, co-owner of Local Time Brewing. “We put a lot of thought and care into our beers, from the ingredients we choose to the stories that inspire them. This medal is a tremendous validation of that work, and I’m especially proud of Devin and our entire team.”

Presented by the Brewers Association, the annual competition awarded 336 medals this year. Judges evaluated 7,267 beer and cider entries from across 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

In the Honey Beer category, UPP Liquids of Bend, Oregon, won gold for Buzz Box, while Brewery Ommegang of Cooperstown, New York, took bronze for Ommegang Farm Fresh Ale. Other North Carolina medalists included Hillsborough’s Eno River Brewing, which earned bronze in American Sour Ale, and Greensboro’s Little Brother Brewing, which won gold in Strong Porter.

“We opened Local Time to share our love of great beer, travel and community,” Gallagher said. “To bring an award like this home to Holly Springs and Lillington is incredibly special. We’re grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.”

Holly Springs, NC, Oct. 6, 2026 — Voters in Holly Springs, Apex and Fuquay-Varina will help decide two Wake County bond referendums totaling $829.1 million and three proposed amendments to the North Carolina Constitution in the November 3rd general election.

The bonds would finance projects for the Wake County Public School System and Wake Technical Community College. County estimates put the combined property tax impact at $5 annually for every $100,000 in taxable property value, or $25 on a $500,000 property.

$829 million in bonds, $443 million in estimated interest

The two referendums would authorize $829.1 million in new general obligation debt. Wake County estimates approximately $443.1 million in interest over the life of the bonds, bringing estimated principal and interest to approximately $1.27 billion.

The interest estimate uses the highest rate Wake County paid on comparable debt during the previous 20 years. Actual borrowing costs will depend on market rates, when the debt is issued, and the bonds' maturities.

The county estimates the two bonds would require a combined property tax increase of 0.50 cents per $100 of assessed value. General obligation bonds are backed by the county’s taxing authority.

$680 million for Wake County schools

The larger referendum would authorize up to $680 million to construct, renovate, expand, improve, and equip Wake County Public School System facilities.

County commissioners also have committed $152.3 million in cash funding, bringing the school capital program to approximately $832.3 million. The program, primarily covering fiscal years 2028 and 2029, includes school renovations and modernization, replacement of aging building systems, safety and accessibility improvements, reduced mobile classrooms, and additional capacity.

The county estimates the school bonds would require a property tax increase of 0.41 cents per $100 of assessed value. That equals $4.10 annually for every $100,000 in taxable property value, or approximately $20.50 on a $500,000 property.

Estimated interest is $363.4 million over the life of the bonds, bringing estimated principal and interest to approximately $1.04 billion.

$149 million for Wake Tech

The second referendum would authorize $149.1 million for Wake Technical Community College projects, including $65 million for renovations at multiple facilities on the Southern Wake Campus.

Another $41 million is planned for workforce training. That includes $20 million for public safety training, $12 million for skilled trades programs at the Southern Wake Campus, $5 million for automotive programs, $2 million for dental hygiene, and $2 million for planning future expansion in western Wake County. Remaining bond funds would support infrastructure, technology, equipment, and other renovations.

The county estimates the Wake Tech bonds would require a property tax increase of 0.09 cents per $100 of assessed value. That equals about 90 cents annually for every $100,000 in taxable property value, or $4.50 on a $500,000 property.

Estimated interest is $79.7 million, bringing estimated principal and interest to approximately $228.8 million.

How the bonds would be repaid

Voter approval would authorize the borrowing but would not establish a single interest rate or repayment schedule. Wake County can issue the debt in stages as funding is needed, with rates determined when the bonds are sold.

Wake County generally repays general obligation school debt over 15 to 20 years. County financial policies call for repaying about 70% of the principal within 10 years.

The $1.27 billion combined principal-and-interest figure is an estimate, not a fixed repayment amount. Actual costs will depend on interest rates, maturities, and when the bonds are issued.

Voter ID amendment

The first proposed constitutional amendment would expand the state constitution’s voter identification requirement.

The ballot language reads:

“Constitutional amendment to require all voters, not just those presenting to vote in person, to present photo identification before voting.”

North Carolina law already requires identification for in-person and absentee-by-mail voting. Absentee voters generally must provide a copy of acceptable identification or complete an applicable ID exception form.

The state constitution currently specifies photo identification for voters appearing in person. The amendment would extend that constitutional requirement to all voters, regardless of how they vote.

The practical change is where the requirement resides. State law now requires photo identification for absentee voters; approval would also place that requirement in the state constitution.

Income tax amendment

The second proposed amendment would reduce the maximum income tax rate allowed by the North Carolina Constitution from 7% to 3.5%. The amendment would not reduce current tax rates; its primary effect would be to limit future legislatures' ability to raise them.

The ballot language reads:

“Constitutional amendment to keep the State income tax rate from being raised higher than three and one-half percent (3.5%).”

The amendment would apply to both personal and corporate income taxes beginning with the 2027 tax year. Any future increase above 3.5% would require another constitutional amendment approved by voters.

North Carolina’s personal income tax rate is 3.99% for 2026 and is scheduled to fall to 3.49% in 2027, just below the proposed constitutional ceiling. Under current law, it is scheduled to fall again to 3.24% in 2030 and 2.99% in 2033, with possible additional reductions.

The amendment also would apply to North Carolina’s corporate income tax, which is 2% in 2026 and 2027. Under current law, that rate is scheduled to fall to 1% in 2028 and 2029 and to zero beginning in 2030.

Approval therefore would not change either tax rate currently scheduled for 2027. It would place a 3.5% constitutional ceiling on what a future General Assembly could impose for personal or corporate income taxes.

North Carolina also imposes a separate corporate franchise tax, which the scheduled phaseout of the corporate income tax would not eliminate.

Property tax amendment

The third proposed amendment would require the General Assembly to enact limits on property tax increases by local governments.

The ballot language reads:

“Constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increases by local governments.”

The amendment does not establish the limits. If approved, the General Assembly would determine the formula and any exceptions through subsequent legislation.

The requirement could apply to counties, cities, towns, special districts, and other local taxing authorities. The amendment does not specify whether limits would be based on inflation, population growth, property values, a fixed percentage, or another measure.

Voters will therefore decide whether the constitution should require limits on local property tax increases, while the amount and structure of those limits would be determined later by the General Assembly.

Voting begins Oct. 15th

Holly Springs, NC, Oct. 5, 2026 — North Carolina residents have until 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 9th, to register through the regular process for the November 3rd general election. Those who miss the deadline can still register and vote during early voting, which begins October 15th and ends at 3:00 p.m. October 31st.

North Carolina residents with a state driver’s license or NCDMV identification card can register online through the DMV. A paper application also can be delivered or mailed to the county board of elections, but it must be received or postmarked by October 9th. Those mailing an application close to the deadline should request a manual postmark at the post office counter, since the processing postmark may differ from the day the envelope was dropped off.

To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen, have lived in the county for at least 30 days before Election Day and be at least 18 by November 3rd. A person serving a felony sentence, including probation, parole or post-release supervision, is not eligible to register. Citizenship documents are not required to register.

Residents can check their registration through the North Carolina State Board of Elections’ Voter Search tool by entering their first and last names and selecting Wake County. Their record shows registration status, residential address, party affiliation and assigned Election Day polling place. Sample ballots are available there once finalized, along with absentee ballot information.

An “inactive” registration status does not prevent someone from voting. Inactive voters remain registered and will be asked to confirm their address when they vote.

Voters should bring an acceptable photo ID when voting in person. Accepted forms include a North Carolina driver’s license, NCDMV identification card, U.S. passport or passport card, and a free voter photo ID issued by a county board of elections. Certain approved student and public employee IDs, military and veterans photo IDs, and tribal photo IDs also qualify.

The address on a photo ID does not have to match the voter’s registration address. Most accepted IDs must be unexpired or expired for no more than one year, although exceptions apply. Voters 65 or older, for example, may use an otherwise acceptable expired ID if it was valid on their 65th birthday.

Voters unable to show acceptable photo ID can cast a provisional ballot and complete a Photo ID Exception Form explaining the qualifying reason. Election workers can explain the available options and requirements.

Those registering and voting during early voting also need proof of their current residence. Accepted documents include a North Carolina driver’s license showing the current address, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document showing the voter’s name and address. If that document is not an acceptable voting photo ID, a separate acceptable photo ID should be brought as well.

Wake County voters may cast an early ballot at any early voting site in the county. On Election Day, they must vote at their assigned polling place. Polls will be open November 3rd from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and anyone in line at their assigned location at closing time may vote.

To find an Election Day polling place, residents can open their Voter Search record and look under “Your Voting Locations.” The state also offers an Election Day Polling Place Search that uses a residential address. Early voting locations and hours are available through a separate Early Voting Site Search; users should select Wake County.

Wake County’s early voting hours are 8 a.m.–7:30 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturdays and 1–6 p.m. Sundays during October 15th–31st. South Wake locations include the W.E. Hunt Recreation Center at 301 Stinson Avenue in Holly Springs and the John M. Brown Community Center at 53 Hunter Street in Apex. The state’s November early voting PDF lists Wake County locations on pages 41–44.

Registered voters also may vote by mail. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. October 20th, and the completed ballot must be received by the county board of elections by 7:30 p.m. November 3rd. Mail voters must include a copy of acceptable photo ID or an ID Exception Form and follow the instructions provided with their ballot.

Holly Springs, NC, Sep. 27, 2026 — Wake County’s median home price fell to $440,000 in August, down $18,500 from July, as both lending activity and real estate transactions slowed slightly across the county.

The county recorded 2,998 new real estate loans during the month, compared with 3,132 in July. Most activity remained in the traditional housing market, with 88% of transactions involving properties valued at less than $1 million rather than large commercial deals.

South Wake’s housing market held up relatively well. Holly Springs, Apex and Fuquay-Varina combined for 259 home sales in August, with a median sale price of $525,000.

Apex had the most activity, recording 141 sales at a median price of $631,500. The town’s highest-priced residential sale was a newly built home on Weston Farm Way that sold for $2.04 million.

Holly Springs recorded just 26 sales but had the highest median price of the three towns at $744,000. The most expensive sale was a home on Rambling Oaks Lane that sold for $1.115 million.

Fuquay-Varina remained the least expensive of the three markets, with 92 sales and a median price of $447,500. Its highest-priced residential transaction was a newly constructed home on Granary Farm Lane that sold for $1.124 million.

Apex, NC, Sep. 4, 2026 — Fourteen Apex food establishments inspected in August received A grades, with scores ranging from 95.5 to 98.5. Eight of the 14 inspections included priority-level violations involving food safety practices.

Temperature control was among the most common problems. Inspectors found refrigerated foods, including milk, deli meats, dumplings and noodles, being held above the required 41 degrees. In some cases, inspectors attributed the temperatures to overfilled containers, open cooler doors, or refrigeration equipment that could not keep up with demand.

Inspectors also cited problems with how some foods were cooled after preparation. Watermelon, sweet potatoes, and noodles were among the foods that did not cool quickly enough or were not cooled using methods such as shallow pans or ice baths.

Other violations included handwashing stations that were blocked or lacked soap or paper towels, as well as chemical spray bottles that were not labeled. Inspectors also cited dirty or damaged equipment, including ice machines, gaskets, and shelving, as well as grease, dust, and other residue on surfaces.

Several inspections identified repairs needed to floors, walls, ceilings, or walk-in coolers. Repeat violations included facility maintenance problems and the improper reuse of containers intended for single use.

Despite the violations, all 14 establishments inspected during August received A grades. The full listings below include each establishment’s score, inspection findings, and corrective actions.

Rules Governing the Sanitation of Food Service Establishments

Rule (15A NCAC 18A .2662 GRADING)

(a) The grading of food establishments is based on a system of scoring. A food establishment that earns a score of at least:

(1) 90 percent shall receive a grade A;

(2) 80 percent and less than 90 percent shall receive a grade B;

(3) 70 percent and less than 80 percent shall receive a grade C.

Permits shall be immediately revoked in accordance with G.S. 130A-23(d) for food establishments receiving a score of less than 70 percent.

Holly Springs, NC, Sep. 4, 2026 — Eighteen Holly Springs restaurants inspected in August received A grades, with scores ranging from 97.5 to 99.5.

Cleaning and maintenance accounted for many of the problems inspectors found. Several restaurants were cited for grease, dirt, or other buildup on shelving, cooler racks, gaskets, and equipment. Inspectors also found clean containers stacked while still wet at several locations, rather than allowed to air-dry before storage.

Other violations included rusting shelves and racks, damaged or malfunctioning equipment, and problems involving handwashing sinks. At some restaurants, items were placed in or around handwashing sinks, and inspectors also found unlabeled cleaning products in spray bottles.

Food-storage problems included raw eggs and raw chicken stored above ready-to-eat foods. Inspectors also cited an improperly stored utensil that was touching food and a handwashing station without properly available soap. Several of the problems were corrected during the inspections.

Despite the violations, every Holly Springs restaurant inspected during August received an A. Scores, inspection findings, and corrective actions for each restaurant are listed below.

Holly Springs, NC, Sep. 2, 2026 — Holly Springs Town Council recognized two community causes during last night’s town council meeting, proclaiming Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day and Hispanic Heritage Month before turning later in the meeting to several events planned around town this fall.

Among those events is a September 11th memorial marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks, along with Compassion Day, Town Day at the Farmers Market, and the launch of a scavenger hunt celebrating Holly Springs’ 150th anniversary.

Council proclaimed September 15th as Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day, recognizing the work of Note in the Pocket (website), a local nonprofit that provides clothing to children and families in need.

Since 2020, the organization has clothed 1,102 people with help from 1,145 Holly Springs volunteers. Executive Director Megan Steinke-Chase, who accepted the proclamation, said clothing insecurity can be less obvious than needs such as food or housing, but can affect children in similar ways.

She pointed to easily missed signs, such as a child wearing shoes that don't fit or a sweater in 100-degree heat. Beyond meeting a basic need, she said having appropriate clothing can affect a child’s confidence, school attendance and ability to interact with classmates.

Note in the Pocket now works with families connected to several Holly Springs elementary, middle and high schools. When one member of a household is referred for assistance, Steinke-Chase said the organization works to provide clothing for the entire family.

Council also proclaimed September 15th through October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month.

More than one million North Carolina residents identify as Hispanic, Latino or Latina, according to the proclamation, with Hispanic residents accounting for an estimated 7% of Holly Springs’ population. The national observance began in its current month-long form in 1988 and starts in mid-September to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries.

This year’s theme is “Together, We Are More. Unidos, Somos Más.”

Nicole Martinez, co-owner of Silver Lake Construction, accepted the proclamation. She spoke about her family’s experience building a business and a life in Holly Springs and thanked the community for its support.

The community “believed in us, gave us opportunities, and supported us along the way,” Martinez said.

Town officials also shared details about the upcoming observance of the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Fire Chief LeRoy Smith and Town Manager Randy Harrington invited residents to attend the memorial on Friday, September 11th at 9:00 a.m. at Fire Station #1 (directions), where the town displays a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center’s North Tower.

Several other community events and initiatives are coming up in September and October. Compassion Day is scheduled for September 12th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holly Springs UCC (directions), with food, music, and community outreach. The town also plans to have a tent at Town Day at the Farmers Market on September 26th.

Later this week, the town expects to launch “Holly Quest,” a scavenger hunt-style app created as part of Holly Springs’ 150th anniversary celebration. Residents can use the app to explore local history and compete for prizes.

Holly Springs, NC, August 29, 2026 — Felton Grove earned its first varsity football victory in school history Thursday night, shutting out Western Guilford 21-0 in the Galaxy’s first varsity home game.

Junior quarterback Chase Watts had a hand in all three touchdowns as Felton Grove improved to 1-1. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved to Thursday because of the threat of storms.

Watts set the tone early, connecting on the team’s first offensive play with freshman wide receiver Sam Lewis for a 48-yard touchdown. Watts later ran for touchdowns of 2 and 18 yards. Lewis also led the Galaxy defense with 12 tackles and two interceptions, helping Felton Grove keep Western Guilford off the scoreboard.

The win is an early milestone for a young Felton Grove program that competed at the JV level last year before moving to varsity this season. The school, which opened last year, currently has only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors and won’t have its first senior class until next year.

Despite the schedule change, the first varsity home game was well attended, with Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert among those in the crowd.

The Felton Grove cheerleaders helped keep the home crowd engaged, along with a strong showing from the “Guardians of the Grove” student section. The school’s dance team and marching band also performed throughout the evening, adding to the atmosphere surrounding the home opener.

Felton Grove returns to action Friday, Sept. 4, against Northern Durham. The Knights are 2-0 after defeating Carrboro 24-3.

Holly Springs, NC, Aug. 24, 2026 — Home sales remained active across South Wake County in July, with 251 homes sold in Holly Springs, Apex, and Fuquay-Varina at a combined median price of $530,000. Apex accounted for more than half of those sales and had the highest prices, while Fuquay-Varina recorded the second-highest sales volume and remained the most affordable of the three markets.

Apex recorded 148 sales, with an average price of about $776,000 and a median of $638,000. The month’s highest-priced sale was 1340 Weston Farm Way, a new-construction home that closed for $2.07 million on July 22. Wake County records have not yet been updated with the home’s square footage or year built.

Holly Springs recorded 14 sales, with an average price of about $670,000 and a median of $602,500. Its highest-priced sale was 105 Duck Branch Drive, a 4,122-square-foot home built in 2015 that sold for $1.2 million on July 28.

Fuquay-Varina recorded 89 sales, with an average price of about $467,000 and a median of $420,000. Its highest-priced sale was 3809 Fairway View Drive, a newly built home on just over an acre that sold for nearly $1.26 million on July 17. County records have not yet been updated with the home’s square footage.

The July numbers show a significant price spread across the three South Wake markets. Apex’s median was $218,000 higher than Fuquay-Varina’s, while Holly Springs fell between the two at $602,500, although its smaller number of sales can make monthly figures more susceptible to individual transactions.

Holly Springs, NC, Aug. 23, 2026 — The watering schedule Holly Springs residents have followed since early July is over.

The Town lifted its Stage 1 water restrictions Aug. 21st after recent rainfall improved conditions. The decision, made following guidance from Harnett Regional Water, means residents and businesses can return to normal water use.

Holly Springs put the restrictions in place July 6th as drought conditions worsened across the Triangle. For residents using the Town’s drinking water for lawn irrigation, that meant watering only on certain days and during limited hours.

Even-numbered addresses were assigned Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, while odd-numbered addresses could water Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Fridays were off limits. Reclaimed water, hand watering and drip irrigation were not covered by those restrictions.

None of those limits apply now.

Holly Springs is back at Stage 0, the normal conservation level under the Town’s Water Shortage Response Plan. Stage 0 asks residents to conserve water but doesn’t impose a mandatory watering schedule.

The Town credited residents with helping keep water use down during the nearly seven weeks the restrictions were in place.

“Residents’ efforts during Stage 1 restrictions helped lower water use and protect the water supply,” the Town said. “Simple actions, like limiting unnecessary outdoor water use and being mindful of daily water habits, continue to make a difference.”

That doesn’t mean the Town is asking residents to stop paying attention to water use. Among its recommendations are fixing leaking faucets and toilets, waiting for full loads before running dishwashers or washing machines and watering lawns early in the morning or later in the evening, when less water is lost to evaporation.

Residents can also monitor their water use and check for possible leaks through the Town’s online water-tracking portal.

If drought conditions return and another Stage 1 alert is needed, Holly Springs says residents will be notified.
