Apex, NC, May 1, 2026 — PeakFest, Apex’s longest-running community festival, will mark its 45th year on Saturday, May 2nd, with a new footprint centered on Hunter Street and the Town Hall Campus.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 73 Hunter St. and is expected to draw more than 45,000 attendees. What began in 1980 as a small arts-and-crafts gathering in a church parking lot has grown into Apex’s signature community event, bringing together artists, performers, nonprofits, and local businesses for a full day of activities.

This year’s festival shifts away from its traditional Salem Street location. Hunter Street will be closed to vehicles between Salem Street and Laura Duncan Road from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate the event.

More than 100 vendors will be set up across the festival footprint, offering arts and crafts, food trucks, and community engagement opportunities. Attendees can expect live music and performances throughout the day, along with a Kids Zone with inflatables and roving street performers.

Several logistical changes accompany the new location:

• Road closure: Hunter Street will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

• Parking impacts: Town Hall, arch lot, and the lot near John M. Brown Community Center will close at 6:00 a.m.; a Town Hall Campus lot near Mason Street will remain open

• Transit: GoApex Route 1 will operate on a detour

• Social district: The festival is outside the district boundaries; cups must be discarded before entry

• Pets: Not allowed within festival boundaries

• Weather: Event will be held rain or shine

Holly Springs, NC, May 1, 2026 — The Holly Springs International Food Festival returns Friday evening (May 1st) to the Holly Springs Cultural Center, bringing a mix of global cuisine, live entertainment, and interactive cultural experiences to downtown.

The free event takes place from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. along Ballentine Street and within the town’s Sip & Stroll Social District. Organizers say the festival, a recipient of the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association Arts & Humanities Award, is designed to blend food, education, and cultural celebration in a single evening.

Attendees can expect a wide range of culinary offerings, from savory and spicy dishes to sweets and frozen treats, representing multiple continents and traditions. Participating vendors include 50Kitchen, Belgian Waffle Crafters, Bobasaur, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, Cafe 301, Chimney Cakery, Cilantro Mexican Cuisine, Crispy Gyoza, Curry in a Hurry, Island Flavour, Kona Ice, Kono Pizza, Mesas El Salvador, Penny’s Greek Street Food, Savor Bowls, and Yagg Sii Tenn.

Beer and wine will also be available for purchase from local breweries, including Bombshell Beer Company, Carolina Brewing Company, and Local Time Brewing.

Passport experience returns with new activities

A central feature of the event is the festival “passport,” which invites attendees to embark on a self-guided journey across the festival grounds. Visitors can pick up a free passport at the Town of Holly Springs tent and collect stamps by visiting seven cultural education stations throughout the event.

No purchases are required to complete the passport. Participants who collect all stamps can return to the town tent for a final stamp and be entered to win a travel-themed prize, including a Holly Springs tumbler. Organizers note that passport quantities are limited.

New this year, the passport experience includes expanded educational games and activities at each station.

In addition to food, the festival highlights cultural awareness through local nonprofits and community groups offering educational exhibits and activities. Lawn seating will be available for attendees who bring blankets or chairs.

Holly Springs, NC, Apr. 29, 2026 — In a community where youth sports often take center stage, one 10-year-old Holly Springs student is working toward a milestone that reflects more than athletic ability.

Levi Holder, who began training in 2022 at Master Chang’s Martial Arts, is preparing to test for his black belt this June. His journey is rooted not only in his own effort, but in a family where martial arts has long been a way of life.

Levi’s mother, Melanie, holds a third-degree black belt, and his father, Travis, holds a second-degree black belt in karate. Both have competed nationally and internationally. When the family moved to North Carolina from South Africa, continuing martial arts training remained a priority, something Levi describes as part of their family’s DNA.

That foundation led Levi and his brothers to begin their own martial arts journeys.

More Than Moves

While Levi studies Taekwondo, his parents’ background is in karate. He says the two disciplines differ in forms and movements, but share the same core values.

Karate emphasizes character, sincerity, effort, etiquette, and self-control. Taekwondo builds on those lessons, emphasizing courage, honesty, perseverance, focus, self-control, and respect.

For Levi, those lessons extend well beyond the mat.

“To me, that means becoming a better person, physically, emotionally, and mentally,” he said.

He describes becoming stronger and healthier, while also learning to stay calm and kind. The training has helped him improve his focus and push through challenges without giving up.

“These are not just lessons for class, they are ways to live every day,” he said.

Growth in and Out of Class

Levi trains under Master Seung Hyeon Hong, who teaches forms, self-defense, and technique, as well as discipline and respect in everyday life. Levi says his instructor treats all students equally and helps them improve in every class.

Students at the school also occasionally learn from visiting masters from Korea and other locations.

That training has carried into Levi’s life outside the studio.

At school, he says Taekwondo has helped improve his focus and discipline. He is part of the AIG math program and credits his training with helping him work harder and do his best.

At home, he has taken on more responsibility, including making his bed, cleaning his room, helping with dishes, taking out the trash, and helping care for his younger brothers.

Milestones Along the Way

Levi’s journey has included several key milestones. In 2024, while a blue belt, he rang the gong and entered the Masters Program. He says that step reflects his goal of becoming a leader and, one day, helping to teach other students.

He has also earned recognition for his efforts, including a Best Tester award and a trophy for reaching the blue stripe belt, which marks the halfway point to a black belt.

Now, as he prepares for his upcoming test, Levi has been assigned a Black Belt life skill of honesty. That assignment is what led him to share his story.

“These are my honest thoughts about how Taekwondo has helped me grow,” he said.

A Community Investment

Levi’s parents say the changes they have seen go far beyond physical skill.

“We have had the privilege of watching Levi grow not only in skill, but in character through his Taekwondo journey,” they said. “The discipline, focus, and respect he has developed have carried into every part of his life, from school to home.”

They also expressed appreciation for the instructors' guidance in that development.

“We are especially grateful to Master Hong and the team at Master Chang’s Martial Arts in Holly Springs for their commitment to developing confident, respectful, and resilient young individuals in our community.”

Looking Ahead

With his black belt test approaching in June, Levi is focused on the final stretch of preparation. His goal extends beyond earning the belt itself, with hopes of continuing to grow and eventually helping teach other students.

For now, he is asking for encouragement as he takes this next step.

He said he would appreciate support from the community and asks for “courage, perseverance, strength, and good luck” as he prepares for his black belt test.

Holly Springs, NC Apr. 27, 2026 — Holly Springs is moving forward with upgrades to Womble Park that will add the park’s first basketball courts and replace aging dugouts, after the Town Council approved a $319,625 design and pre-construction contract during its April 21st council meeting. The work is part of a broader project with a total budget not to exceed $1,075,000 and represents the first phase of improvements at one of the town’s most heavily used recreation spaces. The project includes the construction of two new outdoor asphalt basketball courts with lighting, fencing, benches, and ADA-accessible walkways. The courts are expected to be built to high school regulation size, a notable upgrade compared to existing options elsewhere in town.

Town staff said the addition addresses a clear gap in the town’s park system. “Basketball is underserved,” staff said during the presentation, noting that Holly Springs currently has limited options, including a half-court at the Hunt Center and two smaller, confined courts at North Main Athletic Complex. Those existing courts measure approximately 60 feet by 35 feet, well below the 84-by-50-foot dimensions of a regulation court.

The Womble Park courts will be the first full-sized outdoor basketball courts in the town’s system, designed to accommodate both casual play and more structured use. Lighting for the courts is expected to operate similarly to the town’s tennis courts, allowing extended evening use.

In addition to the basketball courts, the project includes replacing eight existing baseball dugouts constructed of solid concrete walls. Staff said those structures limit visibility and do not reflect current design standards. The new dugouts will be open-air, chain-link structures with separate storage areas, improving sightlines for spectators and providing a more functional setup for players and coaches.

Womble Park serves as a central hub for youth sports, hosting games, practices, and daily recreational activities throughout the year. While newer facilities such as Eagles Landing Park will expand the town’s overall recreation offerings, Womble remains one of the most consistently used parks, making upgrades to its core facilities especially noticeable for families who rely on it.

The design contract approved by the council covers site planning, engineering, and cost development. The project is expected to move quickly once design is complete, with preliminary timelines indicating construction could begin as early as mid-summer. Dugout replacements are expected to be completed ahead of the fall sports season, with basketball court construction to follow, and overall project completion anticipated later in the year.

For residents, the upgrades represent both a near-term improvement to aging facilities and a longer-term investment in recreational infrastructure. The addition of basketball courts in particular addresses a gap that has become more visible as demand for court space has increased across town.

Holly Springs, NC, Apr. 24, 2026 — The Holly Springs Town Council opened its April 21st meeting by recognizing a mix of local residents, town achievements, and community-wide observances, highlighting both individual participation in local government and broader cultural and awareness initiatives.

The largest recognition of the night centered on the 2026 Holly Springs Citizens Academy graduation, where 25 residents were recognized for completing the town’s seven-week program designed to give participants an understanding of how local government operates. The program includes sessions on public safety, growth management, transportation, parks and recreation, and town finances, as well as direct interaction with staff and elected officials.

Beyond individual recognitions, the council also highlighted town-level achievements, including national and statewide recognition for service delivery and communications. Holly Springs received the “Leading the Way Award” from ETC Institute, placing the town in the top 10 percent of local governments nationwide for overall service quality, customer service, and perceived value for taxes and fees.

The town’s Communications and Marketing Department was also recognized for earning eight awards at the North Carolina City & County Communicators conference, including six first-place honors for work ranging from social media and newsletters to public service messaging and event promotion.

Council also issued a series of proclamations recognizing cultural heritage and community awareness efforts observed in May.

The council proclaimed May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, noting the growing presence of Asian American and Pacific Islander residents in Holly Springs and their contributions across education, business, and science. During the proclamation, Mayor Mike Kondratick highlighted both the historical roots of these communities and their increasing role in shaping the town today.

The council followed with a proclamation recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month, acknowledging the long history of Jewish Americans in both North Carolina and the nation, as well as their contributions across fields including industry, the arts, and public service.

A third proclamation designated May 14th as Apraxia Awareness Day in Holly Springs, drawing attention to childhood apraxia of speech, a neurological disorder that affects a child’s ability to plan and produce speech. The proclamation emphasized the importance of early intervention and community awareness to improve outcomes for children and families affected by the condition.

Together, the recognitions and proclamations reflected both the town’s internal focus on civic engagement through programs like the Citizens Academy and its broader effort to acknowledge the diversity and experiences of residents across the community.

Apex, NC, Apr. 25, 2026 — Felton Grove High School’s athletic program has been recognized as one of just eight in North Carolina to receive the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) 2025–2026 Commissioner’s Trophy, an honor that highlights the work student-athletes are doing beyond competition.

The award, which includes a $1,000 stipend for the school’s athletic program, is given annually to a select group of NCHSAA member schools whose teams demonstrate leadership through community service and outreach during the school year.

Felton Grove’s selection places it alongside Ashe County, Athens Drive (Raleigh), Eastern Guilford, Franklin, Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem), North Henderson, and West Brunswick as this year’s recipients.

At Felton Grove, that work has been driven by the school’s Athletes in Action Club, a student-led group that brings together athletes from multiple teams to organize and participate in service projects.

“This is one of the most prestigious honors a high school athletic program can receive in North Carolina,” said Athletic Director Joseph Sharrow, who credited the club as the “major driver” behind the recognition.

The club is led by founder and president Kate Anderson, alongside student leaders Samantha Horne (marketing manager), Olivia Ordine-Perez (secretary), and Jordan Eddy (officer), with guidance from advisor Coach Jordan Stevens. The group represents a coordinated, team-wide approach to service, with participation across multiple athletic programs.

The Commissioner’s Trophy is designed to recognize that type of collective impact. In announcing the awards, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said the selected programs reflect student-athletes “working as teams invested in greater community building endeavors,” demonstrating how those experiences extend beyond athletics.

Holly Springs, NC, Apr. 23, 2026 — Holly Springs will begin enforcing new rules on e-bikes and similar electric-powered devices this summer, following a Town Council vote aimed at addressing a growing number of safety concerns across greenways, sidewalks, and neighborhood streets.

During this week’s meeting, the council approved an e-bike ordinance creating clear guidelines for where these devices can be used, how they must be operated, and what happens when riders break the rules. The town-wide ordinance takes effect June 1st.

The decision comes after residents and town staff reported an increase in unsafe riding behavior, including riders traveling at high speeds on greenways, failing to yield to pedestrians, and ignoring traffic signals on local roads. In some cases, the concern has centered on devices that appear to be e-bikes but are powerful enough to qualify as mopeds or motorcycles under state law.

“We are listening to our community,” town staff said, describing a pattern of complaints that has become more consistent in recent months.

Under the new ordinance, e-bikes and other low-speed electric devices will continue to be allowed on sidewalks, side-paths, and greenways, but riders must yield to pedestrians at all times and operate at safe speeds. The rules are intended to preserve access to the town’s transportation network while reducing conflicts in shared spaces that have become more crowded.

The ordinance also makes a clear distinction between travel corridors and recreational areas. Riding is not allowed in park spaces that are not intended for transportation, including playgrounds, athletic fields, and similar areas where conflicts with children and families are more likely.

A key focus of the new rules is addressing confusion around higher-powered vehicles. Some devices currently being used in town exceed the limits that define an e-bike, placing them in a category that requires licensing, registration, and insurance. Those vehicles are not permitted on sidewalks or greenways and are subject to enforcement if used in those areas.

Town staff warned that these types of vehicles are increasingly being operated by young or inexperienced riders, raising the risk of more serious incidents.

“Coupled with young, inexperienced drivers, we are fearful we will see a significant collision here in town,” staff said during the discussion.

To address the issue, the ordinance introduces a progressive enforcement system that starts with education and escalates for repeat violations. A first offense will result in a written warning. A second violation carries a $250 fine, and third and subsequent violations increase to $500 fines. In certain cases, including repeated violations or the use of illegal vehicles, the town may impound the device.

For residents, the changes will likely be most noticeable on greenways and sidewalks, where expectations around speed and pedestrian right of way will be more clearly enforced. Families may also need to take a closer look at the devices being used by younger riders to ensure they meet legal definitions and can be operated in town-approved areas.

The ordinance reflects a broader shift in how Holly Springs is responding to the rapid growth of electric mobility. As more residents adopt e-bikes and similar devices, the town is moving to define how those vehicles fit into existing infrastructure and what safe use looks like in shared spaces.

Holly Springs, NC, Apr. 21, 2026 — SpringsFest (website) returns to downtown Holly Springs on Saturday, April 25th, bringing a full day of vendors, food trucks, music, and family activities to the town’s Sip N Stroll district.

Hosted by the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce, the free festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and marks the fifth year the Chamber has organized the event. What began as a community gathering has grown into one of the town’s largest single-day events, drawing residents and visitors into the downtown core.

More than 150 local vendors and small businesses are expected to participate, alongside a wide mix of food trucks and music throughout the day. This year’s soundtrack will be driven by two DJs spinning hits spanning multiple decades, creating a continuous, festival-style atmosphere throughout downtown.

Organizers say the event layout has been expanded to accommodate the increased participation and improve the overall flow within the Sip N Stroll district.

What’s New This Year

According to Executive Director Tonya Palumbo, this year’s “big announcement” is the appearance of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, a first for SpringsFest and one of the event’s most anticipated attractions.

Additional new and expanded elements include a mechanical bull and a larger Kids Zone featuring an educational reptile exhibit and the return of Touch-A-Truck.

The car show, sponsored by CDT Automotive, has expanded this year with 30 additional vehicles registered. Frankie Frankk’s Hot Dog Eating Contest also returns as one of the event’s more popular attractions, alongside staples like the Kids Zone.

• North Main Athletic Complex (fka Ting Park) - A free shuttle service is provided to reduce downtown congestion and offer easier access to the event.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

First Quarter 2026 Update

Resident of Holly Springs,

Though December 2 marked this Council’s official start, the work we’re doing on residents’ behalf ramped up as 2026 began. It’s been a busy three months of progress:

• The Holly Springs Hopper transit service launched. Ridership has been strong! The Council is working through ideas on how to expand the service this year.

• Our new Community Garden and Sensory Trail were introduced

• Our partners at Genentech announced they were doubling their investment in Holly Springs, helping to grow our commercial tax base further

• Our Public Works Team expertly managed the Town’s response to two winter storms

• The Council held its annual retreat in early February. Over two days, we had detailed conversations about the issues you told us concern you most, including investing in transportation and reducing traffic, making housing more affordable, and building out our water and wastewater systems.

• During our February 17 meeting, the Council adopted Wake County’s Non-Discrimination Ordinance

• We cut the ribbon on a new sidewalk connecting downtown to the UNC Rex Holly Springs campus

• We continued making progress downtown, approving the design contract for our new festival street (on Avent Ferry Rd. behind Town Hall)

• Councilmembers Deshazor, Hewetson, and I went to Washington, D.C., to advocate for federal funding for our growing wastewater needs

• The Town received a record 29 applications for our non-profit grant program! Thanks to all who applied.

• We welcomed dozens of citizens and organizations to Town Hall to accept proclamations in support of important causes and the communities that make Holly Springs the best place in the world to live. Busy as we’ve been, the next three months will be busier. The Council will focus on creating the Town’s budget for the coming fiscal year (which begins on July 1) and ensuring your priorities are funded. Raleigh, April 14, 2026 — Wake County is moving toward adoption of a new Comprehensive Parks, Recreation, and Open Space master plan (document), a document designed to guide how land is preserved, parks are expanded, and access is improved as the county continues to grow at a pace of roughly 62 new residents per day. With a population now at approximately 1.2 million and tree canopy already reduced by 3.6 percent between 2010 and 2020, the plan is framed as both a response to growth and a long-term environmental strategy.

The county’s park system already plays a measurable role in the local landscape, with more than 9,500 acres of protected open space added since 2003, 1.76 million annual visitors, and an estimated $6.3 million in annual tax revenue tied to parks and preserves. But as demand increases, officials say the system must evolve to keep pace—not just in size, but in how it serves different communities across the county.

What Residents Said and Where the Gaps Are

Public input was central to shaping the plan, with more than 1,000 survey participants in the first round of engagement and over 1,100 additional comments collected through events and outreach in the second phase. Across those inputs, residents consistently emphasized trails, nature access, and connectivity as top priorities.

The feedback carried a clear sense of urgency. “Save more open space, please,” one resident wrote, capturing a theme that surfaced repeatedly across workshops and surveys. Others pointed to the importance of connected infrastructure, noting that “trail connectivity from park to park would be amazing,” while still others highlighted the broader role of parks as gathering places, describing them as “third spaces where they can reconnect with nature and gather with community.”

Geographic disparities also emerged as a defining issue. Residents in southeastern Wake County described having fewer parks and longer travel distances to access trails and greenways, with one comment stating plainly, “The southeastern part of Wake County needs more parks.” That feedback directly informed the plan’s tiered investment strategy, which prioritizes areas with the least access to existing amenities.

A System Built Around Preservation, Access, and Connection

The plan is organized around five core goals: protecting natural and cultural resources, expanding access to recreation, connecting people and places, promoting health and well-being, and sustaining long-term investment. At its center is a vision to preserve land before it is lost while expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation and ensuring access across all communities.

To guide where and how investments are made, the county developed a framework that evaluates projects based on whether they close service gaps, improve greenway connectivity, protect water resources, expand tree canopy, or serve vulnerable populations. This is paired with a countywide mapping strategy that divides future investments into Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 areas, with Tier 1 representing the highest need—typically places with limited access to parks and open space.

The plan also reflects detailed feedback from residents about how parks are used. In addition to more trails and greenways, respondents called for longer trail experiences, improved pedestrian and bicycle access to parks, expanded water access through boat launches and paddle trails, and more inclusive design features that go beyond ADA requirements. Requests for shade, rest areas, and hydration stations also surfaced repeatedly, reflecting both climate concerns and the realities of extended outdoor use.

Balancing Growth, Equity, and Long-Term Investment

While the plan outlines an ambitious vision, it also recognizes the operational demands of maintaining and expanding a park system in a fast-growing county. Strategies include long-range land acquisition, coordination with municipalities, and increased investment in staffing, maintenance, and infrastructure to ensure the system remains sustainable.

Commissioners responded positively during the work session, highlighting both the scale of community engagement and the focus on equity. Questions centered on how different demographic groups, including an aging population and families with young children, are represented in the plan and how those needs will be prioritized as projects move forward.

What Comes Next

With the public comment period now closed, staff is finalizing the plan document and incorporating feedback from multiple departments and stakeholders. Adoption is expected in the coming weeks, setting the stage for a multi-year effort to expand access, protect remaining open space, and address geographic disparities across Wake County.

On Saturday, April 11th, downtown Holly Springs will once again host the North Carolina Spring Classic and SpringsFest, a pairing that brings runners to Main Street in the morning before transitioning into a town-wide festival expected to draw thousands by midday.

Organized in partnership with the Holly Springs Runners’ Project, the event has evolved into a uniquely local tradition, one where the finish line leads directly into food trucks, music, and a day spent downtown.

There Are Two SpringsFest Events in April—Plan for Both!

Holly Springs will host two separate SpringsFest events this April.

The April 11th event featured here is the race-day festival tied to the NC Spring Classic.

A second, larger SpringsFest (website), hosted by the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce, takes place on Saturday, April 25th, in downtown Holly Springs, featuring 150+ vendors, a larger Kids Zone, food trucks, live music, a car show, Touch-A-Truck, and a hot dog-eating contest.

Both events are free and family-friendly, but they are distinct events with different organizers and formats.

A Morning on the Move: The NC Spring Classic

The day begins early, as runners gather along Main Street for the 7th annual North Carolina Spring Classic, a race designed to welcome participants of all experience levels.

Runners can choose from three distances—5K, 8K, and 16K—with each course beginning and ending in downtown Holly Springs and winding through some of the community’s most scenic areas, including stretches near parks, neighborhoods, and the shaded trails around Bass Lake.

New this year, organizers have introduced ruck divisions across all distances, including an 8K ruck that serves as a qualifying event for the broader Holly Springs Ruck Challenge, adding a new layer of competition for participants carrying weighted packs.

More than 600 runners are expected to participate, with staggered starts beginning at 7:15 a.m. for the 16K, followed by the 8K and 5K.

Registration (website) remains open through Wednesday, April 10th at 11:59 p.m., with organizers noting that the event is capped to maintain a high-quality race experience.

The race will proceed rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe.

From Finish Line to Festival

By late morning, the energy shifts, but the crowd only grows.

As runners clear the course, downtown Holly Springs transitions into SpringsFest, beginning at 11:00 a.m. along the 200 block of Main Street. What follows is less a separate event and more a continuation of the morning, one that expands from race participants into a full community gathering. Organizers expect another strong turnout this year as families, neighbors, and visitors fill downtown streets for an afternoon centered on connection and local pride.

Main Street will be lined with food trucks and dessert vendors, while local businesses and artisans set up booths that stretch through the festival footprint. Live music and performances rotate throughout the day, creating a steady backdrop as attendees move between vendors, activities, and gathering spaces.

For families, the event prioritizes accessibility and participation. A dedicated kids’ zone will feature inflatables, games, and hands-on activities, while open areas invite people to linger, explore, and spend the afternoon at their own pace.

A Mayor vs. Mayor Sprint—and a Full Day of Performances

One of the day’s most anticipated moments arrives shortly after midday, when Holly Springs Mayor Mike Kondratick and Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert face off in a 100-meter “Mayor’s Race” at 1:00 p.m.

Framed as a lighthearted competition between neighboring towns, the race has quickly become a crowd favorite—equal parts civic pride and community entertainment.

The performance schedule begins earlier in the day with the National Anthem at 11:00 a.m., followed by a rotating lineup of dance performances, live bands, and interactive sessions, including line dancing and a closing Zumba dance party.

Raleigh, NC, Apr. 7, 2026 — Wake County Commissioners approved two coordinated projects affecting the Holly Springs Community Library during last night’s Commissioners’ meeting, with both items included as part of the consent agenda. The projects advance a planned renovation of the facility and the full replacement of aging building systems, and will be carried out on a shared timeline to minimize disruption to services.

The Holly Springs Community Library, which opened in 2006, shares its building at 300 W Ballentine Street with the Town of Holly Springs Cultural Center and serves residents across southwest Wake County. The approved work focuses on both interior upgrades and the replacement of critical mechanical systems that have reached the end of their useful life.

The larger of the two efforts is a $2.1 million construction contract awarded to Harrod & Associates Constructors, Inc. for renovation of the library and shared lobby spaces. The project includes updates to flooring, interiors, and furniture, along with broader finish improvements and space reconfiguration intended to enhance the patron experience and improve staff workflow.

Plans call for the addition of a dedicated program space and a new staff workspace, as well as relocation of the circulation desk to the front of the library to improve visibility and access. Lighting upgrades are planned for the study areas, and a new unisex, ADA-compliant restroom will be added to the shared lobby. The renovation also includes roof replacement for both the library and the Cultural Center, installation of new security cameras, and the incorporation of public art in accordance with Wake County policy.

Running in parallel is an $866,500 mechanical equipment replacement project awarded to Hockaday Mechanical Corporation. This work will replace major systems serving the building, including air handling units, a chiller, pumps, and components of the building management system. County documents state that much of the existing equipment has reached the end of its useful life, necessitating full replacement rather than repair.

County staff aligned the timing of the mechanical replacement with the renovation project so both efforts can be completed simultaneously. This approach is intended to avoid multiple library closures and reduce overall disruption while improving construction efficiency.

The library is expected to close in late April 2026 in preparation for construction. Work is scheduled to be substantially complete by October 2026, with the facility expected to reopen to the public by the end of the year. During construction, the Cultural Center, which shares the building and is operated by the Town of Holly Springs, will remain open. Temporary cooling equipment will be used as needed to support continued operations in that portion of the facility.

From a funding perspective, the renovation project carries a total development cost of approximately $3 million, including professional services, furnishings, and contingency, while the mechanical replacement project totals approximately $1.1 million. Both projects are funded through Wake County’s Capital Improvement Program. Scheduled from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 300 W Ballentine Street, the free community event builds on its foundation as a celebration of visual arts while introducing a new curated Art Market featuring nine local artisans.

Organizers say the addition reflects a deliberate effort to evolve the event into something that appeals to both families and those with a deeper appreciation for the arts.

“This year we have added an Art Market as we hope to expand our audience,” organizers said. “We want this event to be welcoming to families as well as art connoisseurs.”

A Familiar Footprint, Reimagined

The event will follow a layout similar to the Holly Springs Farmers Market, with activity spread across Ballentine Street and the Cultural Center grounds.

The Art Market will line Ballentine Street, while live chalk art demonstrations will take place along the main sidewalk surrounding the lawn. Eight chalk artists are expected to create works in real time, giving attendees the opportunity to watch pieces come to life throughout the afternoon.

A community-driven “Chalk-a-Spot” mural will be set up on the façade of the Cultural Center’s outdoor stage, allowing residents to contribute directly to a shared work of art.

Backyard games and freestyle chalk areas will round out the experience, reinforcing the event’s focus on accessibility and participation.

Live Art Meets Local Makers

The addition of the Art Market introduces a new dimension to Chalk of the Town, shifting it from a purely observational event to one that also supports local artists through direct engagement.

Nine local artisans will be featured, offering a range of handmade goods and artistic media for attendees to explore.

The combination of live chalk displays and a curated vendor presence creates a layered experience, one that blends performance, participation, and the opportunity to take home a piece of the local arts scene.

Traffic Flow and What to Expect

Unlike a full street closure, Ballentine Street will remain open to traffic during the event, with a detour directing vehicles around one side of the Cultural Center. The modified traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until approximately 5 p.m.

The setup mirrors the familiar flow of the Farmers Market, offering a balance between accessibility and safety while maintaining the event’s footprint in the heart of downtown.

Sip & Stroll Extends the Experience

Chalk of the Town also coincides with Holly Springs’ Sip & Stroll Social District, allowing attendees to extend their visit beyond the event itself.

The district permits the purchase of beer or wine from participating downtown businesses, which can then be enjoyed while walking through the area. Operating from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, Sip & Stroll encourages visitors to move between public spaces, shops, and restaurants while supporting local businesses.

On April 11th, residents can transition seamlessly from chalk art displays to downtown storefronts, outdoor seating, and live activities across the district.

Holly Springs, NC, Apr. 2, 2026 — Duke Energy Progress has asked the North Carolina Utilities Commission to approve an increase in base rates along with a multi-year rate plan that would raise overall revenues by approximately $401 million, or about 8.3 percent. When applied across the proposed plan, the total increase amounts to roughly $728.6 million, or about 15.1 percent.

For residential customers, Duke provides a specific benchmark. A household using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month would see an increase of about $28.06 per month in the first year and an additional $6.59 per month in the second year, for a total increase of approximately $34.65 per month. If the Commission does not approve the company’s proposed performance-based regulation structure, the increase would be lower, at about $23.58 per month.

Duke’s Position: Investment Follows Demand
